Misinformation vs. Disinformation

Misinformation is an umbrella term
used to describe information
that is incorrect or irrelevant
regardless of the author’s intention.

Disinformation falls under the misinformation
category and is when the author intends to
share information that is incorrect and misleading
in order to achieve something like change someone’s mindset.

What is the issue?

Misinformation and disinformation is a problem on social media because people are more likely to be engaged in something fabricated than something that’s actually happening. Social media companies recognize the misinformation and disinformation on their sites but don’t acknowledge it since it keeps people on their device and would take many resources to fully filter out the wrong information. An example of misinformation was the mischaracterization of the disease and protective measures of covid
